Capitalism is normal practice in America
I recently returned from Kansas City (actually this was written in the Atlanta Airport) from a business conference. I love to travel but it has taught me something that I find absolutely ludicrous and hilarious at the same time.
While in KC my organization put me up in the Hyatt Regency in downtown. This is supposedly a very fancy hotel (Dunno…I don’t stay in very many of those by choice.) Being away from work for an entire week I had lots of stuff to catch up on, so I broke out my laptop and thought what the heck I am sitting here frying my brain watching TV (That requires a completely different blog) I might as well do some work. Now my company takes care of me and provides me with a laptop with wireless built in, it’s nice (I am such a geek). I have never had any problems with my computer so I was extremely upset when I kept getting that annoying “Cannot Find Server” page. I naturally assumed that something was wrong with MY laptop (LOL how foolish of me.) I checked everything out and realized that everything was working fine. During my check I found several wireless networks available and my computer is supposed to pick the best one available automatically.
Well I thought that the auto search and find function thingie was not working so I went through every network available and none of them worked! So the next thing I did was to search and see if the hotel had wireless internet; surely a hotel of this size did if nothing else for their own systems. Again HA! I searched through all the literature in my room and trust me there was a lot. Nothing! Finally I found one piece of cardboard that said TMobile on it. Yup you guessed it…they have wireless but expect you to pay a third-party provider to use it. WTF?
So basically what your telling me is that the cheap hotels like Howard Johnson give it away for free but fancy shmancy hotels that give you pricing strategies that are worth 3 rooms but you only get one king bed and a table they make you pay for it??
Why is it that the more you pay for it the less it is worth...Because people that stay there normally have money why is it that they do everything they can to get every last penny of it. Everyone that stays at the Hyatt does not have money and in fact I know one specifically that refuses to pay for something that should be free...it is like having to pay for water or to use the bathroom.

Dude, I know what you mean. I'd rather stay at a Days Inn with free wireless than some fancy hotel with marble in the bathroom but $10 a day Internet charge. At least in Chicago at the Holiday Inn (where we always stay when we go to conferences in The Windy City) the wireless is free and you can (usually) get a good signal.
